Let’s get one thing straight: gut health isn’t just about digestion. Your gut is your command center. It’s where the magic happens when it comes to your immune system, hormones, mood, metabolism, skin, and even how well you sleep.

Inside your digestive tract lives a diverse ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms—bacteria, fungi, and more—collectively known as your gut microbiome. When this ecosystem is healthy and in balance, it helps you break down food, absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation, and produce feel-good neurotransmitters like serotonin.

But when that balance is thrown off, something we call gut dysbiosis, you may start experiencing a cascade of symptoms, like:

  • Mood changes, anxiety, or brain fog

What’s tricky is that gut issues don’t always show up as stomach problems. They can sneak in quietly and affect your skin, your mental clarity, your immune resilience, and you might not even connect the dots.

As a gut health dietitian, I’ve worked with countless clients who spent years chasing symptoms before realizing it all traced back to their gut. When we started supporting their microbiome, things shifted. Fast.

You’re eating healthy. You’re getting decent sleep. But something still feels... off. You’re not alone, and your gut might be at the root of it.
We tend to associate gut health with obvious things like constipation or gas, but here’s the truth: your gut is involved in so much more than digestion. It’s where immune cells live, where nutrients are absorbed, and where critical hormones and neurotransmitters are produced. If it’s out of balance, everything from your energy to your skin can feel it.

Here are some sneaky signs your gut may need attention:

  • Daily bloating, especially after meals
  • Inconsistent bowel movements (or none at all!)
  • Feeling tired or foggy, even after a full night’s sleep
  • Mood swings or low-grade anxiety that won’t budge
  • Skin acting up: acne, rashes, eczema
  • Chronic cravings or unexplained weight gain
  • Immune dips: frequent colds or lingering sickness
  • Food reactions that seem to come out of nowhere

If you nodded yes to any of these, your gut might be waving a big red flag.

The truth is, poor gut health often builds up over time, thanks to chronic stress, antibiotics, processed food, poor sleep, and even emotional trauma. But healing is possible. And it doesn’t have to mean giving up all your favorite foods or micromanaging your diet forever.

If you've ever had a nervous stomach before a big meeting, you already know your brain and gut are connected. But when stress becomes your daily norm? That connection can wreak havoc on your digestion.

This is what we call the gut-brain axis — a two-way street where your brain talks to your gut, and your gut talks right back.

When you’re constantly in fight-or-flight mode, digestion takes a back seat. Your body shuts down non-essential systems (hello, gut), and suddenly you’re dealing with:

  • Bloating or gassiness from slowed digestion
  • Flare-ups of IBS, reflux, or SIBO
  • More "bad" gut bacteria than good
  • Increased intestinal permeability (a.k.a. leaky gut)
  • Poor nutrient absorption, even from a clean diet
  • Stress literally changes the way your gut functions—and not in a good way.

That’s why my gut healing approach goes way beyond meal plans. We talk food, yes, but we also talk breathwork, nervous system regulation, quality sleep, and emotional processing. Because you can’t out-supplement a life that’s constantly on high alert.

The probiotic aisle at the health store is massive, and let’s be real, kind of overwhelming. You’ve probably heard that probiotics are a must for gut health, but here’s the thing: they’re not always the magic bullet they’re made out to be.

Yes, probiotics are live bacteria that can help support a healthy gut, but only if they’re the right strain, dose, and fit for your body. In some cases, especially if you’re dealing with things like SIBO or histamine intolerance, taking the wrong probitiotics can actually make things worse.

Before you toss another bottle into your cart, consider this:

  • Some probiotic strains help with IBS; others do nothing for it
  • Many supplements don’t survive stomach acid to reach the gut
  • Not all probiotics address the root cause of your symptoms

Sometimes, other supplements like digestive enzymes and prebiotics (fiber-rich foods that feed your good bacteria) are more helpful than probiotics themselves.

In my practice, I don’t recommend a probiotic unless we know what’s going on underneath the surface. I help you decide if you need one, and more importantly, which one actually makes sense for your unique microbiome.

Food is supposed to nourish you, not leave you feeling foggy, bloated, or uncomfortable. If you're walking away from meals feeling worse instead of better, it might be time to explore food sensitivities.

Food sensitivities aren’t the same as food allergies. They don’t cause life-threatening reactions, but they can create a lot of low-grade inflammation and discomfort. What makes them tricky? The reaction is often delayed, so you might eat something at breakfast and not feel the effects until later that evening or even the next day.

Here are some classic signs I see in clients with food sensitivities:

  • Bloating or gas after meals (even healthy ones!)
  • Headaches, brain fog, or fatigue that hits for no clear reason
  • Acne, eczema, or other inflammatory skin issues
  • Joint pain or body aches
  • Mood swings, irritability, or anxiety
  • Constipation or loose stools
  • Sinus congestion or feeling puffy

Common triggers include gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, corn, and processed additives, but keep in mind that even "clean" foods like eggs or almonds can become irritating to a sensitive gut.

So how do you know what’s really bothering you? Food sensitivity tests may sound appealing, but without a guided elimination diet that's customized to your body and lifestyle, it can be ineffective and a waste of money/expensive. The most effective approach is a guided elimination diet that’s customized to your body and lifestyle.

Living with IBS can feel like your body is constantly unpredictable and frustrating. One day your gut feels calm, the next it’s in chaos. The truth is, there’s no one perfect IBS diet, but there are strategies that work.

One of the most well-studied options is the Low FODMAP Diet. This approach temporarily removes specific carbohydrates (FODMAPs) that are poorly absorbed and ferment in the gut, leading to gas, bloating, and urgency in many people with IBS. After the initial 4-6 week elimination phase, we systematically reintroduce these foods to identify which ones are actually triggering symptoms.

But the Low FODMAP diet is not the end-all be-all. In fact, I often find that clients do even better when we combine it with:

  • Gentle, gut-friendly fiber (like chia seeds, oats, or cooked root veggies)
  • Mindful eating habits—chewing well, eating without distractions
  • Reducing caffeine, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners
  • Supporting nervous system regulation (because stress plays a huge role in IBS)
